As I remember it from a long time ago (no doubt other peakers will
remember better) the Knight lost but staved off death long enough
to experience a fulfilling moment of joy and an insight into life's
purpose which took the bitterness out of his inevitable death. 
By finding love and peace the Knight achieved a spiritual victory.
