[Cooper, the "Tapes" autobiography]
Why is this guy at once so close to evil and so apparently excessively
immune to it? Why does he both sense evil so acutely while being unable
to perceive it or understand it directly or clearly? Why has he lived
so long with this sense of being intimately related to the evil he
believes he is chasing?
Well, I was thinking about this when I read the autobiography (last
night). As far as I can tell, it's the same thing he said sometime in
the series, which is basically that he's a strong receiver/sender(?).
Anyway, I think that he's able to sense the evil, to know of its
presence. I would then suspect that the evil is also aware of him and
wants to drive him off. I don't know why he seems to avoid it so much,
but it could be like what Earle is doing, which is always striking at
the people around him, sort of toying with him and torturing him, rather
than just destroying him. It's certainly a feature of all stories about
evil that it seems to like to make good suffer before destroying it.
